Background: Wild yam root has been used in women's health for a long time. It was used in Central America to relieve pain from childbirth, menses, and ovulation. One of the compounds in yam root was the first chemial used in the birth control pill, however wild yam root hasn't been used to prevent pregnancy. In modern times yam root is also used to treat arthritis pain. It is also used to relax muscle cramps and to treat irritable bowel syndrome.
Wild yam is primarily used to treat pain.
Joint pain: Wild yam may be used to relieve joint pain from arthritis and rheumatism. It can also relieve muscle spasms.
Women's heatlh:Wild yam can be used to treat pain from childbirth, menses, or ovarian pain.
Digestive: Wild yam can be used to treat irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulitis. It can also be used to relieve inflammation of the gallbladder.
Wild yam is a perennial vine that is native to Central America and North America. The root and tuber are used for medicinal purposes and are unearthed in the fall.
As an decoction, drink 1/2 cup 3 times daily.
As a tincture, take 1/2 tsp with water 2 times daily.
Do not take wild yam if you are pregnant. Consult your health care provider before beginning use of any herb.
