TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS
Tribulus terrestris is a popular herbal supplement that is used to increase testosterone levels, sex drive, and DHEA. The plant that the supplement is extracted from is more commonly known as puncturevine, and it is native to southern Asia, southern Europe, and Africa. In this article I will discuss some research that explains to how Tribulus functions in the human body.
The active chemical components of Tribulus terrestris are steroidal saponins. The most active steroidal saponin in Tribulus called protodioscin. Protodioscin has been shown to trigger the release of nitric oxide in the erectile tissue in the penis. Nitric oxide signals the blood vessels in the penis to dilate (vasodilation), increasing blood flow, and leading to fuller, firmer erections. In animal studies, protodioscin was found to significantly increase testosterone and DHEA levels as well.
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone that is secreted from the adrenal glands. It is the most abundant steroid in the body. In a research study conducted at Airlangga University, Tribulus was found to significantly raise DHEA levels in the adult males (+55% in diabetics, and +85% in non-diabetics). As a result, sex drive was increased in 60% of the men suffering from erectile difficulties (DHEA levels increased in men who were not suffering from erectile dysfunction, although by a lesser amount).
In animal studies Tribulus terrestris has demonstrated its ability to increase testosterone levels by as much as 50%. This was achieved by the mechanism of the protodioscin, which increases the luteinizing hormone (LH); the hormone that signals the body to produce testosterone. There is ongoing debate in the scientific community as to whether or not Tribulus can increase human testosterone levels above the normal range, but it is generally agreed upon that it can help restore and balance normal testosterone levels in men who suffer from suboptimal levels.

TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS
INCREASES NATURAL TESTOSTERONE OUTPUT
Tribulus terrestris is an herbal product that has the ability to maintain or even raise your natural testosterone levels by signaling your body to keep producing lutenizing hormone (LH) which in turn manages the production of testosterone. Increased testosterone leads to increased lean body mass through greater anabolic action, as well as a higher metabolic rate for more lipolysis (fat burning), greater appetite, and possibly more sexual vitality and libido. This is a good product for men past 40, when their hormone levels begin to decline significanlty.
If you are using steroids (illegal in the U.S. without a prescription), your natural testosterone production shuts down after a few weeks and stays depressed for weeks after discontinuing whatever it was you were using. You know that is happening because of the inevitable temporary testicle shrinkage and, often, a loss of libido. Tribulus tricks your body into not seeing the exogenous hormones, thus allowing LH to continue being produced normally. So, it is useful during a steroid cycle. If you only use it afterward or between cycles, it may help bring your natural testosterone back on-line faster.
Tribulus terrestris, also known as “puncture vine,” is a plant that grows in tropical environments around the world, and is particularly abundant in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Tribulus has had a history of medicinal use in Europe, India, and China for thousands of years. Its traditional usages are as rich and varied as the cultures that employ them; it has been recommended for treatment of water retention, depression, liver, kidney, and heart disease, and is reported to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Tribulus terrestris has also long been valued for its ability to stimulate libido and treat infertility in both men and women, and modern research indicates that this belief may be well founded. Studies have shown that terrestris indirectly stimulates testosterone production, and may help boost both sexual and athletic performance.
Terrestris increases production of luteinizing hormone (LH), a hormone produced naturally in the body that has a direct effect on testrosterone levels and sex drive. Laboratory studies reported that Tribulus terrestris increased sexual activity as well as sperm count and motility in animals.
Athletes that wish to increase strength and build muscle mass often combine Tribulus terrestris with DHEA and adrostenedione supplements, a method known as “stacking.” Studies have shown that taking these three substances together is an effective means of raising testosterone levels.
